"where did mommy go?"

molan freezes, spoon clamoring against the bowl of half-eaten cereal on the placemat before her.

deiji is the one who asked, pigtails longer and prettier on her shoulder than molan's are. all eight years of the eldest sister gather in front of their father expectantly, waiting for an adult response and getting something much more frantic in return.

their father tears through the house, 'honey' thick and suffocating the more its repeated in desperation. it hits, then, that their mother didn't say anything before leaving that morning — at least, not to deiji and her father.

no one was looking at molan when their mother was mentioned.

her gaze lingers, something shiny and too sad to be in a six year old's eyes as she thinks about the way her mom had just come downstairs a bit before, a bag full and loud on her shoulder and mascara matted to her tearful, pretty eyes.

the sound of the pill bottles in her mom's bag, always numerous, always numbing, rattle when she steps close. hei-ran smooths down her youngest child's hair with trembling fingers, kisses the top of her head — the hushed goodbye by molan's mother is too quickly given. she stares at the back door hei-ran slipped out of, shivering at the draft pressing in from the light snowfall outside.

molan doesn't finish her cereal that morning.
molan also doesn't eat much cereal after that.

once again caught playing in dad's closet, in the corner where her mother's things are kept for hoping and simultaneous heartbreak.

the guitar is dark and shiny, something beautiful. molan can almost remember what her mother's voice sounds like as she plucks at a few strings, having always liked this particular belonging the most.

her father settles down next to her, dimpled cheek with soft smile lines. he bumps her shoulder, warmth as natural to him as molan's budding interest in musical instruments.

"... if it's okay." munhee's hand rests on top of molan's hair, still for a moment until he does a good job of ruffling it to ruin.

"it's okay."

"molan ... MOLAN!"

thick and heavy, fogged up like glass. a weighted chest, a sore throat she can feel. there's fingers on molan's shoulder, shaking them urgently until the drowsiness gives way to the slow slip of their eyes open.

deiji is practically on top of molan, gaze glassed over and face pale as hair falls from her ponytail in a disheveled state — the pieces still frame her face, like some painting. of course they would.

"what happened? wh ... what's wrong?" molan pushes at deiji's knees, trying to sit up despite the soreness and heat sticking to their skin.

her sister's chest shakes with an inhale. molan can see it, even in the dark.

"y-you were screaming. in your sleep, you —" she stops, slipping off of molan and wiping at the little tear trailing down her own cheek. "i've been trying to wake you up for the longest time, molan! jesus! ... wh ... weren't you having a nightmare?"

sharp, then soft. molan's chest and head pang in tandem as they shake their head. everything from before is like static, fuzzy and sensitive and unclear.

deiji sinks, knees to chest and suddenly smaller than she has ever looked, even next to molan. she stares for a moment, baffled.

"are you sure ... ? it sounded really bad. it ..." scared her is what deiji wants to say, but doesn't.

"n-nevermind. try going back to sleep, okay?"

"it's yours, if you want it."

molan thumbs through the empty pages of the dotted moleskin in their lap, brow furrowing and gaze hesitant to meet their father's.

"... okay," a momentary sigh, a nervous shake out of his hands before munhee pulls a chair out beside his youngest.

"look, kiddo. your mom, uh —" talking about her still catches in his throat, even though his hair has greyed in streaks and his laugh lines have deepened since she disappeared.

"... your mom was always having a weird dream. lots of nightmares, too. she would draw them out, write little notes so she could explain them to me the next morning. it helped her sleep better."

molan is older now, but the lilac tint beneath their eyes is harsh enough to remind munhee that this is his kid, his baby, who can't sleep through the night. a glance too long at molan is almost jarring in this moment, when they look so much like their mother; long dark hair, pretty exhausted eyes.

"write them down?" molan fidgets with the corner of the journal, finding a dog-eared page in the back once their father pets the back of their hair and resumes cooking.

eyes blow wide at the neat handwriting spelling out her mother's name. her father notices the silence, and doesn't say anything when molan clutches the journal to their chest and takes it upstairs.

"one, two, and three —"

dance practice. vocal lessons. language learning. a quick run to the convenience store across from the company building to sneak snacks. meals, showering, minimal sleep between.

this kind of routine was to be expected, really, when molan and a newly christened 'daisy' became trainees. unlikely for siblings to be scouted by entertainment companies at the same time, the weekly boba trip snuck by the two on the way home one lucky afternoon begged to differ.

unlike daisy, molan had never thought about becoming an idol. they did like music, though — and dancing, oddly, which they were becoming rather good at.

a week after molan's sixteenth birthday, and they catch their sister's eye in the mirror when the dance instructor corrects her. daisy is in the line behind, frustration clear in her tired expression.

"molan, practice with your sister later." a bow of the head is for politeness, but the apologetic look molan tosses toward daisy is met with something sharper.

the two years between them has never felt like this. molan goes to the convenience store without daisy for the first time that year, bringing her back the chocolate panda cookies she likes.

molan leaves them on her pillow in the dorms and tries not to cry, especially when daisy wakes them up from another nightmare and sleeps next to them under the covers without a word.

what daisy was very good at was being exactly what they wanted. small, pretty, with a good voice to match. she was perfect, is perfect, and always had been. molan didn't match up — tall, taking up too much space, "unconventional looking".

"are you guys actually related, though?" one girl asks, something that the other trainees joke about lightly while it picks at molan's heart.

late at night, between weird dreams and sneaking past a slumbering daisy, molan sits on the cold bathroom floor and counts the newer scars healing on the soft, much too pliable skin of their thighs.

the comparisons between the siblings never really stop the entire four years they train together. molan's dreaming gets worse.

when their contract ends under the guise of wanting to pursue university, the strange gleam in daisy's eye doesn't go unnoticed.
